Emptying my mind with free-writing
Posted on July 25, 2008.
I am constantly writing, not only because it’s my job, but also because I enjoy it. I don’t write fiction novels in my spare time or anything of that sort, but I do collect my thoughts and feelings in a document and use this to empty my head. This is free-writing.
Free-writing is essentially taking a small portion out of your day, 5-15 minutes, and just writing about whatever you’re feeling about at the time. While writing you never stop or slow down until your time is up. This process of just spilling anything and everything out really calms me down. It doesn’t matter what you write about, be it that project you have due next week or that cute chick you saw today, what you write about isn’t important.
If you’re bored, set a timer right now for 10 minutes and just write. Don’t stop, don’t hit the delete key if you made some spelling mistakes, just keep going until your time is up. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that after the 10 minutes your head is fairly clear, you feel good and you can go on with your day.
If you’re wondering where this post came from, I’ve been getting back on my free-writing bandwagon and writing once each day over the last week or so. It may seem stupid, give it a shot and let me know what you think and how you feel afterwards.
